Summary

Norte e Sul é um romance social da escritora inglesa Elizabeth Gaskell. Ao lado de Esposas e Filhas (1865) e Cranford (1853), é um de seus romances mais conhecidos. Foi adaptado para a televisão duas vezes, em 1975 e 2004. O primeiro livro de Gaskell, Mary Barton (1848), enfatizou as relações entre empregadores e trabalhadores em Manchester, no ponto de vista dos trabalhadores pobres; Norte e Sul, por sua vez, apresenta e comenta a situação de proprietários de fábricas e de trabalhadores em uma cidade industrializada através do ponto de vista de uma protagonista oriunda do sul da Inglaterra. Este livro mantém, tal como foram escritos, os insultos raciais e de outro tipo da sua época; o Guia do Livro explica essas palavras onde aparecem.
