محمد ابراہیم ذوق

1790–1854

Biography

Sheikh Muhammad Ibrahim Zauq was born in Delhi in 1790, the son of a man of modest rank, and rose to be poet laureate at the Mughal court. He taught the verse of Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughal emperor, and was for years the foremost master of poetry in Delhi, a rival of Ghalib. He died in 1854.

He was admired above all for the command of his language and the polish of his ghazals, and for his qasidas in praise of his patrons. Many of his couplets are still quoted.

The book on this site, انتخابِ کلامِ ذوق, is not his complete work. It gathers the poems that volunteers have so far typed on Urdu Wikisource.
