Yi Ha-eung, the poor and shrewd prince later known as the Daewongun, passes years among the dissolute and the idle in the 1850s and 1860s, playing the fool so that the powerful Andong Kim clan will not see him as a danger. Kim Dong-in's novel ends on the eve of the day when his young son is made king. This book uses the racial and other slurs of its period as written; the Book Guide explains these words where they occur.
