The rich and reclusive old Polikarp Białopiotrowicz spoils one grandson in St Petersburg and leaves the other, Hieronim, to fend for himself, and his ruthless experiments almost cost Hieronim his life. Rodziewiczówna's 1898 novel follows the student who rescues a small girl from a flood and, in the end, wins the love of the terrible grandfather.
