Angelika, the generous daughter of the Pähkinämäki manor, pulls a small boy named Sam from a burning house and takes him into her life. Told in the old style, with playful chapter summaries and asides to the reader, Lehtonen's novel follows Sam from a cherished childhood toward the circus that calls him, and Angelika through the kinds of love its five parts are named for. This book uses the racial and other slurs of its period as written; the Book Guide explains these words where they occur.
