In 1634 in Guimarães, the cutler António Leite's seventeen-year-old son Domingos refuses both his father's trade and the cloister his mother has in mind, and sets his heart on being an apothecary. Camilo's historical romance, one of his Romances Nacionaes, follows the restless boy into the turbulent years around the Restoration of 1640. This book contains scenes of violence as its author wrote them.
