Father Antônio de Morais, a young and ardent priest, arrives in the Amazon river town of Silves to convert the Indian peoples of the interior, with a pious scheme in his head and no knowledge of the region. Inglês de Sousa's naturalist novel of 1891 follows him as the forest, the town's people and his own senses test his vows. This book uses the racial and other slurs of its period as written; the Book Guide explains these words where they occur. This edition omits one or more passages describing sexual acts involving children; each omission is marked in the text.
