Kasim, a teacher in Bukittinggi, lives happily with his wife until her mother's interference and the claims of the maternal uncles under Minangkabau custom come between them. Tulis Sutan Sati's novel weighs the household against adat as the marriage is pulled apart and a child has to be fetched back.
