A historical romance set in the Bengal of Akbar's reign, when the Mughals were still subduing the Afghan chiefs of the delta. It opens on a summer evening on the bank of the Bhagirathi, where two boys and a girl are playing on the sand. It is an early Bengali novel by Romesh Chunder Dutt, the civil servant and historian, published in 1877. This book uses the racial and other slurs of its period as written; the Book Guide explains these words where they occur.
