The King of Navarre and three lords swear to give up women and study for three years, and the arrival of the Princess of France and her ladies soon undoes their vow. The play is a festival of wordplay that ends, unusually for a comedy, with a sobering turn. This book uses the racial and other slurs of its period as written; the Book Guide explains these words where they occur.
