Julio Desnoyers, the pampered heir of a fortune made on the Argentine pampas, lives a fashionable idle life in Paris until the summer of 1914 brings war to France. The novel follows a family with French and German branches as the war overtakes them all. This book uses the racial and other slurs of its period as written; the Book Guide explains these words where they occur. This book contains scenes of violence as its author wrote them.
