Mikkel Thøgersen, a poor and brooding student in Copenhagen at the start of the sixteenth century, crosses the path of the reckless nobleman Axel and is drawn into the service of King Christian II. Over a lifetime he follows the king through the wars in Sweden, the bloodbath in Stockholm and the long fall that ends in a prison cell at Sønderborg. Johannes V. Jensen's dark, lyrical novel was later voted the greatest Danish novel of the century. This book uses the racial and other slurs of its period as written; the Book Guide explains these words where they occur.
