Machado de Assis's 1884 collection, whose title says its stories belong to no particular date. Ironic and sharply observed, they range from a parable about the devil founding his own church to tales of vanity, love and money in Rio. This book uses the racial and other slurs of its period as written; the Book Guide explains these words where they occur. This book contains scenes of violence as its author wrote them.

Summary written with Claude Opus 5.5.
