Johan, a Dutch painter staying at a hotel in Tangier, sets out with his sketching gear among the European guests and the life of the town. The day builds toward the procession of a religious brotherhood whose ecstatic dancers the foreigners call the madmen, rendered in van Looy's dense, painterly prose. This book uses the racial and other slurs of its period as written; the Book Guide explains these words where they occur.
