At a meeting of a Stockholm women's charity, the overlooked Miss Liwin stands up to say something nobody wants to hear, and the narrator lets us know she carries a hidden story of her own. Marika Stiernstedt's novel traces a mother and a daughter kept apart by the shame that once fell on unmarried mothers, and the foster home between them. This book uses the racial and other slurs of its period as written; the Book Guide explains these words where they occur.
