Flanders around 1300: the French king holds the count and his son Robrecht van Bethune, the Lion of Flanders, and his governors squeeze the cities. In Bruges the weaver Pieter de Coninck and the butcher Jan Breydel rouse the guilds, and Conscience's patriotic novel builds toward the battle at Kortrijk in 1302. This book contains scenes of violence as its author wrote them.
