The best known of Jaishankar Prasad's collections, in nineteen stories, opening with the title story, in which two captives meet aboard a ship far out at sea. Many of the tales are set in ancient India and its trading ports, others in his own Banaras. This book uses the racial and other slurs of its period as written; the Book Guide explains these words where they occur.
