Maria do Carmo, a young woman training as a teacher in Fortaleza, lives under the roof of her godfather, a clerk named João da Mata, and has a head full of novels and marriage. Adolfo Caminha's novel of 1893 is a bitter, close picture of provincial society in the north-east of Brazil. This book uses the racial and other slurs of its period as written; the Book Guide explains these words where they occur. This edition omits one or more passages describing sexual acts involving children; each omission is marked in the text. This book contains scenes of violence as its author wrote them.
