Gonçalo Mendes Ramires, last of an ancient noble house, is writing a novella about his heroic medieval ancestors while he struggles with debts, local politics and his own weak character. Eça de Queirós sets the two stories side by side, the old glory and the modern heir. This book uses the racial and other slurs of its period as written; the Book Guide explains these words where they occur. This book contains scenes of violence as its author wrote them.
