Summary
Devdas and Parvati grow up as neighbours in a village, quarrelling and inseparable as children, until the difference in their families' standing begins to count. Written in 1901 and first printed in 1917, Sarat Chandra's novella is the most often filmed story in Bengali and tells the fall of a man who cannot decide. This book uses the racial and other slurs of its period as written; the Book Guide explains these words where they occur.
