Emilio Salgari
1862–1911
Biography
Emilio Salgari was born in Verona in 1862 and died in Turin in 1911. He began as a journalist and writer of serial fiction, and over his career he produced a very large body of novels and stories, written for popular magazines and cheap book series and read by many Italians of his day. He travelled very little, so the jungles, seas and deserts of his books came from reading, research and imagination. His private life was hard. Money worries and illness weighed on him, as did his wife's illness, and he took his own life in Turin in 1911.
His best-known creations are Sandokan, the Tiger of Malaysia, whose adventures are set among pirates and colonial powers in the East Indies, and the Black Corsair, a pirate hero of the Caribbean. Both have had a long afterlife in comics, films and television. Many Italians regard him as the founder of their adventure novel, and his influence on popular culture is still visible. He also wrote a group of novels set in the Sudan during the Mahdist uprising.
Two of his novels are on this site: La favorita del Mahdi, set in the Sudan of the Mahdist uprising, and L'Uomo di Fuoco, another adventure of the same kind. His books are fast, colourful and full of loyal, reckless and brave heroes. Their picture of the non-European peoples and places they describe belongs to the colonial age that produced them, and readers should keep that in mind, as they would with any product of their time.
