Alexander Kuprin
1870–1938
Biography
Aleksandr Ivanovich Kuprin was born in 1870 in Narovchat, in Penza province, and died in Leningrad in 1938. As a boy he was sent to military schools, and the harsh discipline there left a lasting mark on him and gave him material for his early stories about army life. After the revolution he left Russia and lived abroad for a time, then returned to Soviet Russia. He is usually counted as a realist who wrote mainly about what he had lived through. He was a friend and regular correspondent of Anton Chekhov, who was ten years his senior, and he often sought Chekhov's advice until Chekhov died in 1904.
His breakthrough was the novel The Duel (Поединок, 1905), which follows young officers in a provincial garrison town and attacks the brutality and empty routine of army life. It caused a sensation and drew sharp responses from critics on both sides, and a group of officers even wrote to thank him. Other well-known works include the novella Olesya (Олеся, 1898), a love story set among the forest people of Polesia, and The Garnet Bracelet (Гранатовый браслет, 1911), a novella about a telegraph clerk's hopeless love for a princess. The Garnet Bracelet was made into a film in 1965.
Three of his works are on this site: The Duel, Olesya and The Garnet Bracelet. The first is his most pointed piece of social criticism, the second shows his lyrical side and his interest in lives far from the capital, and the third is a tragic romance of the kind he wrote in later years. Kuprin did not chase literary experiment. He wrote about the people and places he knew, and that plainness is why his stories are still worth reading.
