Vicente Blasco Ibáñez

1867–1928

Biography

Vicente Blasco Ibáñez (1867–1928) was a novelist, journalist and republican politician from Valencia, in eastern Spain. He began his career as a radical newspaper writer, was elected to the Spanish parliament, and was often in trouble with the authorities for his opposition to the monarchy. In his last years he lived mostly in France, where he died in 1928.

Blasco wrote novels in many genres, but his best work is rooted in the landscape of Valencia. Some of his most admired books describe the people of the Albufera, the large lagoon and marshland south of the city, and the rice and orange country around it. Several of his novels were adapted for Hollywood, notably Blood and Sand and The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, which gave him a large readership far beyond Spain.

Three of his novels are on this site: Arroz y tartana, set among the rice fields and the people who work them; Cañas y barro (Reeds and Mud), a tragic story of love and rivalry among the fishing and farming families of the Albufera; and Entre naranjos, which takes readers into the orange-growing country around Valencia. Together they show how Blasco turned a regional setting into a broader picture of Spanish rural life and its divisions.
