Minna Canth
1844–1897
Biography
Minna Canth, born Ulrika Wilhelmina Johnson (1844–1897), was a Finnish writer who also campaigned for social causes. She began writing while she ran her family's draper's shop, and she did so as a widow raising seven children.
Her work argues for women's rights, set against a culture that she felt kept women from expressing themselves and reaching their goals. Her best-known plays are The Worker's Wife and The Pastor's Family, while Anna Liisa has been adapted for film and opera more than any of her other works.
Among Finnish-language writers she followed Aleksis Kivi as a major dramatist and prose author, and she was a pioneer as a woman journalist in Finnish-language newspapers. Her ideas ran ahead of many of her contemporaries and drew controversy in her lifetime. Finland has celebrated her with Minna Canth Day, held each 19 March since 2007.
Her works on this site are Agnes, Hanna and Kauppa-Lopo. Some editions are credited to the translator Hanna Lindberg, so readers may meet her in translation as well as in Finnish.
