الطاف حسین حالی
1837–1914
Biography
Altaf Hussain Hali was born in Panipat in 1837. He went to Delhi, where he came to know Ghalib, worked for some years in Lahore, and later became a close supporter of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and his movement for reform. He died in 1914.
He wrote ghazals in his earlier years, but is best known for turning Urdu verse toward the concerns of his time. His long poem on the rise and fall of Islam, the Musaddas, made him famous in 1879. He was also a pioneer of Urdu literary criticism, in his Muqaddama-e-Sher-o-Shairi, and the writer of lives of Ghalib and of Sir Syed.
The book on this site, انتخابِ کلامِ حالی, is not his complete work. It gathers the poems that volunteers have so far typed on Urdu Wikisource, and the Musaddas as a whole is not among them.
