اکبر الہ آبادی
1846–1921
Biography
Akbar Allahabadi, whose full name was Syed Akbar Hussain Rizvi, was born in 1846 near Allahabad. He trained in the law, served the British government as a judge, and died in 1921.
He is the great humorist of Urdu verse. In couplets, quatrains and short poems he laughed at the new schools, the new manners, the dress, the committees and the learned societies of colonial India, and at the anxiety of his own people to copy the West, though behind the laughter lay a serious grief at the loss of older ways. Many of his lines passed into everyday speech.
The book on this site, انتخابِ کلامِ اکبر, is not his complete work. It gathers the poems that volunteers have so far typed on Urdu Wikisource.
