John R. Swanton
1873–1958
Biography
John Reed Swanton (1873–1958) was an American scholar who spent his career recording and studying the languages, stories and histories of Native American peoples. He worked across several linked fields at once: ethnology, which compares the customs and social organisation of human societies; folklore, the study of traditional narrative; and linguistics, the analysis of language itself. His reputation rests on that combination, and on his practice of recording the stories themselves rather than only paraphrasing them.
Most of his research was carried out for the Bureau of American Ethnology, the research body of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. His fieldwork and publications concentrated on two regions. One was the Southeastern United States, where he studied nations such as the Creek and the Choctaw and drew heavily on the early written accounts of European explorers. The other was the Pacific Northwest and southeastern Alaska, home to the Haida and the Tlingit. His Southeastern work leaned on documentary history, which helps explain his standing in ethnohistory.
Two of his books are on this site. Haida Texts and Myths: Skidegate Dialect gives stories told by Haida storytellers of Skidegate, a village on Haida Gwaii off the coast of British Columbia, which Swanton recorded and translated. Tlingit Myths and Texts does the same for stories told by Tlingit storytellers of Sitka and Wrangell in southeastern Alaska. Both preserve narratives that were passed on by word of mouth, and both remain useful to people studying these traditions. A reader should remember that such texts record what one collector heard, in one place and at one time, so they are best read as a careful witness rather than the last word on the stories.
