Eça de Queirós
1845–1900
Biography
José Maria de Eça de Queirós (1845–1900) is widely regarded as the leading Portuguese novelist of the realist movement. He was born in Póvoa de Varzim, a seaside town in northern Portugal, and studied law at Coimbra. He then joined the diplomatic service, which took him to Cuba, to England and finally to Paris, where he was serving as a consul when he died in 1900.
Eça wrote sharp, ironic novels about middle-class Portuguese life. O Crime do Padre Amaro looks at the hypocrisy of the Church and its clergy, and Os Maias follows a family and a Lisbon society full of pretension and scandal. He also wrote short stories, travel writing and satirical sketches, and with his friend Ramalho Ortigão he co-wrote the satirical magazine As Farpas, a pointed chronicle of public life in Portugal.
Three of his books are on this site. A Cidade e as Serras (The City and the Mountains) follows a wealthy man from Paris who goes back to his family's estate in the Portuguese countryside. A Correspondência de Fradique Mendes is a set of letters written by a fictional poet and traveller, a dandy whose letters comment wryly on art, politics and society. A Ilustre Casa de Ramires is a satirical story about a minor nobleman who sets out to write the history of his family and struggles with the weight of its past.
