Biography
Samuel Rutherford Crockett (1859–1914) was a novelist from Scotland who wrote under the pen name S. R. Crockett. He was born on a farm in Galloway, in the south-west of Scotland, and the landscape, speech and religious life of that region run through much of his writing. He trained for the ministry of the Free Church of Scotland and served as a minister for some years before he left the pulpit to write full time. He died in France in 1914.
His early novels were widely read, and his books about Galloway, including historical adventures such as The Raiders, brought him a large audience. Crockett is often grouped with the Kailyard writers, who wrote warmly and sometimes sentimentally about village and rural life in Scotland. Later critics came to find that sentiment too sweet, but his books helped make Scottish country life a subject for popular fiction across Britain and beyond.
On this site you can read The Lilac Sunbonnet: A Love Story, a novel of courtship set in the Galloway countryside. It shows the warmth and the sentiment that made him popular in his day, and it is a good way to see how he turned the people and places of his childhood into fiction.
