Biography
Rosauro Cagne Almario (1886–1933) was a Filipino writer who worked in Tagalog, the language that became the basis of the national language, Filipino. He was a journalist, a newspaper editor and manager, and he was active in public life as a nationalist and a politician. He is remembered as the editor of the daily Pagkakaisa. In the press he also wrote under several pen names, among them Batang Simoun, Matanglawin, Raxa Soliman and El Satirin.
His writing expressed nationalist and reformist ideas and a strong interest in Filipino tradition and custom. He spoke out against corruption and graft, and he supported the growth of literature written in Tagalog and the other Philippine languages. In 1926 he was general manager of the newspaper La Opinion.
On this site you can read Ang Mananayaw, a work in Tagalog that appears in the catalogue under his name. Its title means “The Dancer”. The book is a way into Tagalog writing of the early twentieth century, a period when writers in the language were building a literature of their own.
