Jose N. Sevilla
Biography
Jose N. Sevilla was a Filipino writer, poet and grammarian who wrote in Tagalog. He was born on 29 October 1880 in Binyang, in Laguna province, to Ambrosio Sevilla and Silvina Tolentino, and he was educated at a school that carried the name of Epifanio del Castillo. The date of his death is not given in the source used for this page.
During the revolution against Spain he served under Gregorio del Pilar. When the Americans arrived he turned to writing to supplement a small wage. In 1939 President Manuel L. Quezon asked him to write a Tagalog grammar, and the result, Salitikan ng Wikang Pambansa, appeared in 1940. The word salitikan, meaning grammar, is traced to that book, where it is built from the Tagalog words for word and letter.
He was a member of the former Akademya ng Wikang Tagalog and of the Surian ng Wikang Pambansa. He tried to purify Tagalog by avoiding English and Spanish words and by coining new ones, but few of his coinages lasted; bantayog, meaning monument, is one that did. His fiction includes Ang Pag-Ibig ng Layas, a Tagalog work published in 1921, and that is the book by him on this site.
