Dolors Monserdà
1845–1919
Biography
Dolors Monserdà i Vidal was a Catalan writer born in Barcelona in 1845, who died in 1919. She wrote poems, plays, short stories, essays and newspaper articles, but her name rests mainly on her novels. She began writing in Spanish and switched to Catalan after 1875, which placed her among the writers of the Catalan cultural revival. She is also remembered as one of the first feminists in Catalonia.
Her first novel, La Montserrat, appeared in 1893, and her best-known work, La fabricanta, followed in 1904. The later novel follows the social climb of a woman, Antonieta, from the old city of Barcelona into the Eixample, the new district where the city's middle class settled, and it portrays the manners of that society. Monserdà was a journalist as well, and she wrote for La Renaixença and the magazine Feminal. In 1909 she chaired a poetry contest, the Jocs Florals of Barcelona, and she is reported to have been the first woman to do so.
The site holds La Montserrat, the novel of 1893 that opened her career in prose. Its subtitle calls it a novel of the customs of the writer's own time, and it shows the kind of society she later examined in La fabricanta. Readers can start with this book and then move on to the work that made her best known.
