Biography

Khwaja Abdul Raoof Ishrat Lucknowi (1868–1940) was an Urdu poet, writer and scholar who worked in Lucknow, one of the great centres of Urdu literature. He is best known as Ishrat Lucknowi. He served as secretary of the Anjuman-e-Islah-e-Sukhan, a Lucknow society concerned with the correct and refined use of Urdu, and he is remembered as a forceful advocate for keeping the language in good health.

His writing reflects that concern. Among his works are several books on Urdu vocabulary and grammar, the tools through which a literary language is learned and kept in order. Reference books of this kind matter because they set out the standards by which Urdu is taught and judged.

Two of his books are on this site under their Urdu titles. لکھنؤ کا عہد شاہی (Lucknow ka Ahd-e-Shahi) means something like Lucknow in the age of kings, and قواعد میر (Qawaid-e-Mir) uses qawaid, the Urdu word for rules or grammar, in its title. Together they show a writer who cared both about his city and about the language written there.
