Feng Menglong

1574–1646

Biography

Feng Menglong (1574–1646) was a Chinese writer, editor and folklorist of the late Ming dynasty. He came from Changzhou county, near Suzhou in Jiangsu province, and used several style names, among them Youlong. He failed the civil service examinations more than once, so he made his living instead by writing, compiling and publishing. Late in life he gained a modest academic rank and served as magistrate of Shouning county in Fujian. The fall of the Ming dynasty in 1644 grieved him, and he died two years later.

His lasting reputation rests on popular vernacular fiction and song. Between about 1620 and 1627 he put together three large collections of colloquial short stories, known as the Three Words (Sanyan), which English editions usually call Stories to Enlighten the World, Stories to Caution the World and Stories to Awaken the World. Most of the material came from older tales and oral storytelling, which he reshaped in a lively, readable style. The collections brought the Chinese short story to a wide readership and encouraged later writers, Ling Mengchu among them, to produce similar books. He also gathered Wu-dialect folk songs from the Suzhou region into a collection called Mountain Songs (Shange), and he revised plays, including a version of Tang Xianzu's The Peony Pavilion.

Two of the Three Words are on this site under his name: 喻世明言 and 醒世恆言. Each collects stories about love, fortune, crime and moral reckoning, drawn from the lives of merchants, scholars and ordinary townspeople. Because Feng compiled and reshaped earlier material rather than inventing every story, these books are best read as a window onto late Ming storytelling and popular morality, not as the unaided work of a single author.
