Raul Brandão
1867–1930
Biography
Raul Germano Brandão was born in 1867 in Foz do Douro, a parish of Porto on the Atlantic coast, and died in Lisbon in 1930. He was a military officer, a journalist and a writer. His family were seafarers, and the sea and the men who work on it appear again and again in his writing.
Critics have praised him for two qualities: the realism of his descriptions and the lyricism of his language. Both can be seen in the way he moves from exact detail about a place or a person into passages of feeling.
Two of his books are on this site. Humus is a novel of country life. Os Pobres, which means The Poor, carries in this edition a preface letter by the poet Guerra Junqueiro, and its title says plainly what it is about. Read together, they show the observant eye and the lyrical voice that made his reputation.
