Júlio Dinis

1839–1871

Biography

Júlio Dinis was the pen name of Joaquim Guilherme Gomes Coelho, born in Porto in 1839. He trained as a doctor, taught at the medical school in Porto, and wrote poems, plays and novels as well. Tuberculosis forced him to give up his post, and he moved to the coastal town of Ovar for the sake of his health. He died of the same disease in Porto in 1871, at the age of thirty-one. He is regarded as the first major Portuguese novelist to write about the middle class of his own time, and he did so in a plain, direct style that reached a large readership.

His most famous novel, As Pupilas do Senhor Reitor (The Dean's Pupils, 1867), was written at Ovar and drew on his own family circumstances. It describes country life in a gentle, appealing way and shows how English culture had come to influence Portugal. His mother was of English descent, which gave him a close view of that influence. It was an immediate success and went through many editions. A year later he published Uma Família Inglesa, a novel about English society in Porto. Some of his poems and plays only appeared after his death.

Several of his books are on this site. As Pupilas do Senhor Reitor and A Morgadinha dos Cannaviaes, which is subtitled a chronicle of village life, both carry the rural setting that made him popular. Uma Família Inglesa and Os Fidalgos da Casa Mourisca are also here. Together they show what made him so widely read in his lifetime: quiet, domestic stories, warmly drawn people and an easy, direct style.
