Franz Kafka

1883–1924

Biography

Franz Kafka was born in 1883 in Prague, then part of the Habsburg monarchy, into a middle-class German-speaking Jewish family. He studied law and spent his working years in legal and insurance offices, jobs that wore on him because he felt his real calling was writing. Only a small part of his work appeared in his lifetime. He died of tuberculosis in 1924, at the age of 40, still little known outside a narrow literary circle.

After his death his friend Max Brod declined to carry out Kafka's request to destroy the unpublished manuscripts, and their publication eventually brought him acclaim. His best-known works are the novella The Metamorphosis (1915), the novel The Trial (1925) and The Castle (1926), which he left unfinished. He also wrote short fables and aphorisms, many with a comic edge. The adjective 'Kafkaesque' now describes situations in which an ordinary person is trapped by vague authority and absurd bureaucracy, and his influence reaches well beyond literature into philosophy, film and cultural thought.

Two of his books are on this site. Der Prozess follows Josef K., who is arrested one morning and never told what he is charged with, as he tries to make sense of a court whose workings stay hidden from him. The Metamorphosis, listed here as Die Verwandlung and in English under its own title, opens with Gregor Samsa waking to find himself turned into a huge insect. His family, who depend on his wages, must then face the loss of their income as well as the burden of his condition. Both works show the loneliness and helplessness that run through Kafka's fiction.
