Devaki Nandan Khatri
1861–1913
Biography
Devaki Nandan Khatri, also spelled Devakinandan Khatri, was a writer in Hindi. He was born on 18 June 1861 in Samastipur, in what is now the Indian state of Bihar, and died on 1 August 1913. He is widely regarded as the first Hindi writer of tilism, the kind of fiction that fills its pages with enchanted palaces, hidden passages, sorcerers and clever spies. His novels did a great deal to spread the Hindi language.
His most famous book, Chandrakanta, is a romance of princes and princesses, spies and enchanted places, and it was read so widely that many people who did not know Hindi learned the language in order to read it. He also gave Hindi readers words such as tilism and ayyar, which became familiar in everyday speech. His other works include Chandrakanta Santati, Kajar ki Kothari and Bhootnath, the last of which was finished by his son Durga Prasad Khatri.
Two volumes of the sequel, Chandrakanta Santati, are on this site: volume 2 and volume 4. The sequel runs through many volumes, so these two show the series in the middle rather than at its start, and a reader who wants the whole story will need the rest of the set.
