Prudenci Bertrana
1867–1941
Biography
Prudenci Bertrana i Comte was born in 1867 in Tordera, a town in Catalonia, and died in Barcelona in 1941. He is counted among the leading modernist writers of the Catalan language. As a young man he studied in Girona and then went to Barcelona to take a course in industrial engineering, but he turned to journalism. He ran magazines such as L'Esquella de la Torratxa and La Campana de Gràcia, wrote for several Catalan newspapers, and also taught art.
His first stories were published in 1903. Much of his fiction returns to three subjects: the landscape of the country, the lives of peasants, and animals. His novel Josafat (1906) is the book with which his literary career is usually said to begin, and the short-story collection Proses bàrbares (1911) is among his best-known prose. Late in life he wrote the trilogy Entre la terra i els núvols, made up of L'hereu, El vagabund and L'impenitent. It is his most openly autobiographical work and is shaped by the death of three of his sons. In 1933 he won the Fastenrath Award for his play El Comiat de Teresa.
This site holds three of his books. El meu amic Pellini i altres contes (My Friend Pellini and Other Stories) is a collection of his short fiction, where his feeling for landscape, peasants and animals is most evident. Els Herois (The Heroes) adds another side to the same body of work. Josafat, the novel that opened his career, shows where his writing began. His strength lies in close observation of Catalan landscape and rural life, which is what makes these books worth reading today.
