Jaishankar Prasad
1889–1937
Biography
Jaishankar Prasad was a poet, playwright, short-story writer and novelist in modern Hindi. He was born in Varanasi, then often called Kashi, and Prasad was his pen name. Hindi sources give 1890 as his birth year and English ones give 1889, so check the year against the edition you use. He attended school only briefly; most of his early education took place at home, where he studied Hindi and Sanskrit with private teachers, and he later taught himself Vedic Sanskrit. He died in Varanasi in November 1937 of tuberculosis.
He is one of the four main poets of Chhayavad, the romantic movement that reshaped Hindi poetry in the 1920s and 1930s. Many critics treat his long poem Kamayani, published in 1936, as the movement's central achievement. He also wrote historical plays, such as Skandagupta, and essays. In prose he wrote short stories and novels, and his fiction moves between historical settings and the social life of his own day.
Three of his books on this site are in Hindi. Aakashdeep (आकाश-दीप), published in 1929, and Aandhi (आँधी), published in 1931, are collections of short stories. Titli (तितली), published in 1934, is his second novel, a story of village life set against a background of social change. Readers who know him mainly as a poet will find in these books a view of his work outside the verse.
